The Tanneries of Marrakech
While Fès is famous for its iconic Chouara tannery visible from rooftop terraces, Marrakech has its own deeply rooted leather tradition, tucked inside the historic medina. Here, master tanners work in open-air pits using methods that have remained virtually unchanged since the medieval era.
The process begins with raw animal hides — soaked, scraped, and stretched by hand. Workers wade into stone vats filled with natural substances like pigeon droppings, quicklime, and water to soften the leather. What follows is a slow, deliberate process of dyeing using natural pigments — saffron for yellow, poppy for red, indigo for blue, and henna for orange.
Why Vegetable Tanning Matters ?
Unlike modern industrial tanning which uses harsh chromium chemicals and takes just hours, traditional Moroccan vegetable tanning takes weeks. The result is a leather that is more durable and long-lasting, naturally breathable, free from toxic chemicals, and rich in texture that only improves with age.
