The Ancient Art of Moroccan Tanning — A Tradition Passed Down for Centuries

Walk through the winding alleys of Marrakech’s medina and you’ll notice something remarkable — the unmistakable scent of leather drifting through the air, a smell that has defined this city for over a thousand years. Marrakech is home to one of the world’s oldest leather-working traditions, and at Kech Heritage, every pouf we sell carries this history within its seams.

The Tanneries of Marrakech

While Fès is famous for its iconic Chouara tannery visible from rooftop terraces, Marrakech has its own deeply rooted leather tradition, tucked inside the historic medina. Here, master tanners work in open-air pits using methods that have remained virtually unchanged since the medieval era.

The process begins with raw animal hides — soaked, scraped, and stretched by hand. Workers wade into stone vats filled with natural substances like pigeon droppings, quicklime, and water to soften the leather. What follows is a slow, deliberate process of dyeing using natural pigments — saffron for yellow, poppy for red, indigo for blue, and henna for orange.

Why Vegetable Tanning Matters ?

Unlike modern industrial tanning which uses harsh chromium chemicals and takes just hours, traditional Moroccan vegetable tanning takes weeks. The result is a leather that is more durable and long-lasting, naturally breathable, free from toxic chemicals, and rich in texture that only improves with age.

This is the leather that goes into every Kech Heritage pouf.

A Living Heritage

The tanners of Marrakech are not factory workers — they are craftsmen who learned their trade from their fathers, who learned from their fathers before them. Each hide that passes through their hands carries generations of knowledge.

When you bring a Kech Heritage pouf into your home, you are not just buying a piece of furniture. You are preserving a living tradition that has survived centuries in the heart of Morocco.
